Kanawha Stone Company is seeking an experienced Heavy Civil Superintendent to join our growing team.

This position is ideal for a proven field leader who knows how to manage people, plan work, maintain production, solve problems and keep safety at the forefront of every operation. The Superintendent serves as one of Kanawha Stone Company’s primary leaders in the field and is responsible for ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, professionally and in accordance with project requirements.

Kanawha Stone Company has offices near Charleston, West Virginia; Roanoke, Virginia; and Elkins, West Virginia. Superintendents may be assigned to projects throughout West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, North Carolina, Maryland and Tennessee.

Job Summary:

The Heavy Civil Superintendent will provide day-to-day field leadership for KSC crews and subcontractors on large-scale civil construction projects. This individual will coordinate closely with Project Managers, Project Engineers, other KSC leadership, clients and project partners to plan and execute the work.

The successful candidate will be expected to understand the project from the plans and specifications through field execution, effectively organize manpower and equipment, maintain production goals, identify and resolve field challenges, and set the standard for safety and professionalism onsite.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Lead field crews and coordinate daily construction activities to safely and efficiently execute project work.
• Review and understand project plans, specifications, schedules, budgets and scope requirements.
• Plan upcoming work and coordinate manpower, equipment, materials and subcontractors to maintain project production.
• Monitor daily progress and productivity and make adjustments as necessary to keep work on schedule.
• Promote and enforce KSC safety expectations, policies and procedures while maintaining a strong safety culture in the field.
• Coordinate and manage subcontractor activities to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with project requirements.
• Communicate effectively with Project Managers, Project Engineers, owners, inspectors and other project representatives.
• Identify potential field conflicts, constructability issues and schedule concerns before they impact production.
• Maintain quality expectations and ensure work is completed in accordance with plans and specifications.
• Participate in short-term scheduling, look-ahead planning and project coordination.
• Provide strong leadership to field personnel by setting clear expectations, holding team members accountable and developing employees.
• Maintain a professional job site and represent Kanawha Stone Company well in all interactions with clients, subcontractors and project partners.

Education and Experience:

• Five or more years of progressively responsible heavy civil construction experience preferred, including experience leading crews or supervising field operations.
• Previous experience as a Superintendent, General Superintendent, Foreman or similar field leadership position strongly preferred.
• Experience with large-scale earthwork, grading, site development, utilities, drainage, roadway construction, drilling/blasting or similar heavy civil operations preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a related field is beneficial but not required. Equivalent field experience and demonstrated leadership ability will be strongly considered.

Skills and Abilities:

• Strong field leadership skills with the ability to direct crews, establish expectations and maintain accountability.
• Strong understanding of construction safety practices and the ability to consistently reinforce safe work procedures.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications and project documents.
• Ability to plan work several weeks ahead and anticipate manpower, equipment, material and subcontractor needs.
• Strong understanding of heavy civil construction methods, sequencing and field operations.

• Ability to manage production while maintaining safety, quality and schedule expectations.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities in a fast-paced field environment.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to build productive working relationships with employees, clients, inspectors, subcontractors and other project partners.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and other basic construction technology used for scheduling, planning and project communication.
• Willingness and ability to travel to KSC project locations as required.
