JOB TITLE: Heavy Equipment Operator

REPORTS TO: Superintendent 

JOB OVERVIEW

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe, effective and appropriate manner. Heavy equipment may include trucks, front-end loaders, dozers, graders, compactors, and other pieces of equipment. The Heavy Equipment Operator must also clean, maintain and secure all equipment as directed by legislation, policies and procedures.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

• Operate heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or loss of life.
• Operate all heavy equipment in a safe and efficient way according to all relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
• Perform daily safety and maintenance checks.
• Clean heavy equipment as scheduled and/or required.
• Ensure heavy equipment is safely and securely stored.
• Advise supervisor of any requirements for maintenance or repairs.
• Practice workplace safety and actively participate in weekly safety meetings,
• Other duties as dictated by management.

GENERAL SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:

The incumbent must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:

• knowledge of truck and equipment safety,
• knowledge of operation of front-end loaders, dozers, graders, compactors, and other pieces of heavy equipment,
• knowledge of equipment maintenance and storage,
• knowledge of road construction and maintenance techniques,
• knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The Heavy Equipment Operator has a physically strenuous and demanding job. He/she will be lifting, pulling and managing heavy equipment and objects. The Heavy Equipment Operator will have to work in all weather, and must be prepared for both extreme heat and cold. The Heavy Equipment Operator must ensure that all activities are completed in a safe and efficient way.  The Heavy Equipment Operator must work outside in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat.
