    JOB TITLE: Project Engineer

    REPORTS TO: Project Manager

     

    JOB OVERVIEW

    The Project Engineer supports the successful planning, execution, and completion of construction projects by assisting the Project Manager and field supervision with technical, administrative, and operational tasks. This position is responsible for project documentation, quantity tracking, scheduling support, cost control assistance, and coordination between field operations, subcontractors, and the project management team. The Project Engineer plays a key role in ensuring project work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project plans, specifications, and company standards.

     

    RESPONSIBLITIES & DUTIES

    PRE-CONSTRUCTION

    • Review project plans, specifications, contracts, and bid documents.
    • Assist Project Manager and Superintendent with project startup planning.
    • Develop familiarity with project scope, pay items, quantities, and schedule.
    • Coordinate with field teams to establish project control, layout requirements, and staging plans.
    • Assist with development of project schedules and milestone planning.
    • Prepare purchase orders for materials, equipment, and subcontracted services.
    • Coordinate project startup needs including utilities, site access, security, and temporary facilities.
    • Assist in development and review of machine control models and survey data when required.
    • Participate in safety planning and ensure project safety procedures are understood.

    DAILY

    • Assist Project Manager and Superintendent with coordination of construction activities.
    • Interpret plans and specifications for field personnel and subcontractors.
    • Track daily production quantities and maintain production reports.
    • Assist with field engineering tasks including layout verification, grade checks, and documentation.
    • Maintain daily project documentation including photos, diaries, and field reports.
    • Verify that work performed complies with project plans, specifications, and quality standards.
    • Assist with resolving drawing conflicts, design discrepancies, and constructability issues.
    • Coordinate with survey crews and GPS/machine control teams to support grading operations.
    • Assist with tracking time and materials work and obtaining approvals from owner representatives.
    • Maintain organized documentation of stone tickets, delivery receipts, and other project records.

    WEEKLY

    • Compile and submit project documentation including daily reports and tracking logs.
    • Track and update quantity progress for major pay items.
    • Assist Project Manager with subcontractor coordination and work planning.
    • Participate in project progress meetings with owners, engineers, and project stakeholders.
    • Update project tracking spreadsheets and documentation.
    • Support project scheduling updates and review upcoming work activities.
    • Ensure documentation is submitted to the office including receipts, tickets, and field paperwork.

    MONTHLY

    • Assist Project Manager in preparing pay applications and progress billing documentation.
    • Verify installed quantities and coordinate with survey data when required.
    • Track project cost data including labor, equipment, and materials.
    • Assist with preparation of change orders and documentation supporting additional work.
    • Review project budgets and cost reports with Project Manager.
    • Assist with project forecasting and schedule updates.

    PROJECT CLOSEOUT

    • Assist in completion of punch lists and final inspections.
    • Compile final project documentation including as-builts, material certifications, and project records.
    • Assist Project Manager in verifying final quantities and cost reconciliation.
    • Coordinate closeout documentation required by the owner or engineer.
    • Ensure all project files and records are properly archived.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, & REQUIREMENTS

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
    • Internship or prior experience in heavy civil, site development, or earthwork construction preferred.
    • Knowledge of construction plans, specifications, and contract documents.
    • Experience or coursework related to construction scheduling, estimating, or project management preferred.
    • OSHA safety training or equivalent experience preferred.

    SKILLS

    • Strong understanding of construction processes related to earthwork, grading, utilities, and site development.
    • Ability to interpret construction drawings, grading plans, and specifications.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
    • Familiarity with construction scheduling software such as Primavera P6 preferred.
    • Experience with GPS machine control systems and construction surveying concepts preferred.
    • Basic knowledge of construction quantity calculations and cost tracking.
    • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with field crews, engineers, and project managers.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Willingness to travel and work on project sites throughout the company’s operating region.
    • Valid driver’s license.
    • Authorized to work in the United States.
    • Ability to work outdoors and visit active construction sites.
    • Ability to work extended hours when necessary to support project schedules.
    • Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving abilities.
