SPENCER, W.Va. (WCHS) — Drivers traveling from Ripley to Spencer will find a major improvement on their road trip this week.
A highway construction project decades in the making opens in Roane County Thursday.
The new 4.3 mile Scott Miller Hill Bypass on U.S. 33 near Spencer will be open to traffic.
Built by Kanawha Stone of Poca, the $40.4 million bypass eliminates a curvy and steep section of highway just south of Spencer, providing quicker and easier access to the Roane County seat for trucks and cars.
The work was part of the Roads to Prosperity bond issue, but efforts to get the road date back to the previous century.
“It’s a great project that plants a new seed to help growth happen in Spencer and Roane County,” Spencer Mayor Terry Williams told Eyewitness News.
While the construction project is finishing up two months ahead of schedule, Spencer residents have been waiting for moment a long time.
“I had an engineer the other day give me some records where he and I were in a meeting with several people at that time and they were 42 years ago,” Williams said. “I had my name and date written on them. That’s been awhile.”
The mayor noted the new road’s importance as most goods arrive by truck and the old road saw multiple accidents and could be tough to travel in winter.
